Meet Mabely
First and foremost, I paint pictures with words. To me, writing is not only a form of communication, but a plethora of colors coming together to form something human and beautiful. Having grown up in the poverty stricken south side of Chicago as well as being Mexican – American, my idea of beauty doesn't only include sunshine and blood red birds; beauty is the rain mixing with the sobs of a mother and beauty is my aunt chismeando – gossiping- with my next door neighbor. My goal is to invoke the sense of such splendor into each and every letter I scratch onto paper (and computers; oh, technology!)
Telling stories is all I’ve ever done and all I’ve ever wanted to do. I like to think that the moment I was born and placed into my mother’s arms, I began trying to interpret the words her heart was trying to tell me. Way before I could even read, I remember attempting to make sense of the words on the back of cereal boxes and VHS tapes. However, everything changed for me when I won first place in the Young Authors Competition in 4th grade, as well as in subsequent years; this is when the unthinkable notion that people could actually want to read what I write began to creep into my mind and soul.
Now, I am a freshman at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, majoring in Journalism with a focus in News-Editorial and a Minor in Creative Writing. I will do all that I can to someday be able to publish a young adult novel as well as become a columnist. I know that if I continue to put in the hard work I have unceasingly been able to provide to my employers, professors, and my own personal pieces of work, that I will reach my goals and even surpass them.
